May: Month of arts in Brussels

May brings art to the Belgian capital in different forms: a Hungarian trumpet soloist to play with the National Orchestra, a Secessionist poster exhibition to be displayed on the City Park fences and an 18th century tapestry in a contemporary ’paraphrase’ to be shown in the Musées Royaux d' Art Histoire.

Gábor Boldoczki trumpeteer plays with the Belgian National Orchestra at the ’Hungary in Focus’ arts festival on 15 May. Boldoczki is an exceptional talent of his generation: at the age of 14 he had already won the Hungarian National Trumpet Competition. Since January 2010 he has been a teacher at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest.

For this special evening, the musicians have put together a ’mini tour’ around Europe: apart from playing Kodály-tunes, they also play works of Belgian, Austrian, Armenian and Spanish composers. After Brussels, the show goes on to Antwerp and Ličge.

The ’European Masters of Secession, Barcelona–Brussels–Budapest’ exhibition will be on display on the Brussels City Park fences between 19 May and 30 June. The programme series is a highlighted event of the Hungarian EU presidency: the pictures of buildings designed by three European Secessionist architects – the Belgian Victor Horta, the Spanish Antoní Gaudí and the Hungarian Ödön Lechner –have travelled around the 3 countries on 1,5m x 1,5m posters to be shown in public places as a ’fence-display’.

The ’Web of Europe – Contemporary paraphrases of an eighteenth century Brussel’s tapestry’ exhibition will be open from 20 May to 14 August in the Musées Royaux d' Art Histoire. The exhibition draws attention to a common European cultural heritage: woven tapestry. The contemporary paraphrase is based on the tapestry Mercury Hands Over the Infant Bacchus to the Nymphs, which is kept at the Museum of Applied Arts in Budapest. In an international art project, 27 contemporary artists were asked to virtually cut out and re-interpret 27 parts from the original material – the number 27 refers to the number of EU member states – and put them together in a new composition. The ’Web of Europe’ installation will be brought to the Museum of Applied Arts in Budapest in the autumn.
